Quinn is no figure of a comic masquerade, but a man of raw emotion and terrible drive. It is upon his performance that the film's success hinges, and he has not let down the producer, Director Pietro Francisci or the rest of the cast.

In spite of plenty of bloodshed and the presence of the talented Anthony Quinn, this epic about the famous barbarian never manages to generate genuine excitement.

Quinn dominates the action -- his role is tempestuous and well played. For that matter, nearly every member of the cast gives a good account of himself.

It bears down on the side of the ultimate conqueror, and Quinn certainly is as great a victor here as he was in Viva Zapata for which he won an Oscar in 1952.
