Like an amnesiac thriller with the tension removed, this wistful, island-set melodrama has strong performances and the sly hypnotic power of a high-end meditation app.

If this isn’t a film to set the heart racing, it doesn’t leave that organ entirely untroubled; with his script’s echoes of 40s weepie Random Harvest, Lanners is aiming for similar status.

Its main strength is a palpable sense of place: the windswept island with mountains in the background is a vividly evocative setting (the film was shot on the islands of Lewis and Harris) for a story of isolation, loneliness and a kind of connection.

Lanners has a surprising amount of unexpected turns of events up his sleeve considering the remote setting, although none of them feel unbelievable.
