The bitter pill of messaging in the film comes sugar-coated with an irreverent, playful tone and earthy humour as it earnestly underscores woman power and female solidarity.

Billed as a comedy, this is questionable, as the film’s underlying very serious themes are the battle between Muslim tradition and modern society, domestic violence, attitudes to women and women’s independence.

Halim takes on the theme of traditional old-world values vs. a more modern and less misogynistic approach. The director nicely blends high comedy with disturbing drama as well as touches of romance and suspense.

The entire cast is enchanting, with Amani making a dream heroine, always with a smile on, but ready to take on intolerance when she must.
