Bogdanovich has once again -- and catastrophically -- misunderstood his talent, and attempted an exercise in style instead of trusting his gift for telling popular stories with feeling.

Peter Bogdanovich's film is an okay comedy-drama about the early days of motion pictures.

Bogdanovich is trying to do an interesting and commendable thing in dramatizing aesthetic passion; his failure is as noble as it is conspicuous.

A flawed yet charming homage to the early days of moviemaking.
