Certainly less of a dud than the director's inane original, this follow-up is even more tyke-oriented, but at least it's a livelier yarn and boasts a slick upgrade in visual effects.

Soi Cheang's second contribution to the franchise is a vastly improved production that marks the finest attempt yet at adapting Journey to the West for an effects-driven blockbuster.

Action-packed, mildly exhilarating and over-produced with plenty of visual pizzazz in 3D.

Pou-Soi Cheang's sequel to his 2014 blockbuster proves an infinitely more engaging and impressive mounting of key elements from Wu Cheng'en's classic novel.
