My New Gun

The film attempts to be both a pawky comedy of American manners and an ironic warning about violence breeding violence. It succeeds best as the former, painting its odd world with some shred brushstrokes.

Somehow the relevance of guns in all of this top-heavy and untidy plot material tends to get lost.

Whatever else, My New Gun pleads the case for gun control very effectively.

Unlike most movies about suburbia, Cochran's indie displays no condenscension or mean-spiritedness to her characters, instead taking a quirkily laconic, minimalist approach.
