An epic drama with epic proportions... The opening battle is Saving Private Ryan-level harrowing.

Visually, "Harbin" is often stunning. Woo Min-ho often is painterly in how he re-creates the early 20 century. Along with cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo ("Parasite," "Snowpiercer"), he uses the screen as a canvas for some absolutely ravishing images.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to get too excited when all that effort is wasted on stick-figure heroes who talk a lot about but mostly hint at the depth of their characters.

A visual feast for the eyes, Harbin highlights how necessary compassion is for humanity, but especially during times of war. If you’re looking for a gripping watch that will have you at the edge of your seat, Harbin should be your first pick.
