While the convoluted plot is more readily digested by those familiar with the legends, the combination of frenetic battles, bawdy slapstick, and a rowdy, indefatigable hero make NE ZHA 2 likely to extend the reach of Chinese animation.

Dozens of characters come through, give you a minute-long monologue about their complicated backstory, and then go to battle. It can be exhausting. But the animation, and the world building, can be really spectacular.

Since the animation looked stunning, I went in with intense curiosity. I emerged 145 minutes later confused and nursing one of the worst headaches I’ve had in decades.

What makes Ne Zha 2 special is that it's authentically Chinese but somehow so universally relevant.
